Hubble sees something new
Sep. 16th, 2008 08:15 amSaw this earlier this morning, and thought it was pretty interesting. That sounds a lot like some kind of supernova explosion from the duration and brightness change, but the people that do supernovae for a living say it didn't fit with any known profile, even after distortion from gravitational lensing.
Hat tip to the instapundit.
According to the original article at Sky and Telescope the observation was made two and a half years ago so they've had plenty of time to study it and try to figure out what on earth it is.
If I get bored and don't have a headache later, I plan on skimming their paper at the arxiv for details.
