I found this as I was browsing that bastion of gaming, 4chan's /tg/. It's a website that has some neat images, and lots of text, about the heraldry of the Holy Roman Empire. Give it a browse. It's a terrible layout, but there's a lot of neat things there.

Or something.

Behind the cut is a neat e-mail with a nice link from the Tekumel Yahoo! Group.

Thanks to a post at Dean's World I see that the Aztec's cannibalism was not in fact lies by the evil spanish oppressors, but cold hard fact. Cortez is getting some apologies from historians, right?

Holocaust surviver turned Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal has died. It's a shame there aren't more people like him around, but at least at this point in time I'd have to say that any Nazi criminals that escaped him should also be kicking the bucket. I'm sure he'd have wanted to make sure they were all dead before he died, but I hope he can rest peacefully in the knowledge that he brought many of them to justice no matter where they decided to hide.

"The answer I have found for myself (and which need not necessarily be the answer for every survivor) is: I want to be their mouthpiece, I want to keep their memory alive, to make sure the dead live on in that memory." -- Simon Wiesenthal

http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Croissant

Alas, it seems the story of how the Croissant came to be may be a mere legend. It's a shame because the story eventually leads to the reason why US military ration crates have a crescent on them (i.e. We ripped it off from the French Monarchy when they sent us supplies in the Revolutionary War.)

I don't know why I did, but I started up a new Nation States country. I like the flag I whipped up for it. I wonder how long I'll stay interested in Lost Zanj? Hopefully longer than my last country (Sinj).

Speaking of flags, Morgan in #Returners dug this link up where a dude grades the various flags from around the world. He shows remarkable ignorance about what the symbols mean, and I don't care for his aesthetics in some cases (Bhutan's flag is cool), but he calls it right on a lot of marks (all those garish African tri-colors, bleh!).

Super Bomb

I came across references to "Tsar Bomba" while reading Schlock Mercenary and found some discussion of this fact on the message board for the comic. Led me to some interesting places for research on it. Apparently it was designed to be a hundred megaton bomb. That's tremendously huge. The Soviets only built one, and used it in a test whose purpose was more political than anything else. When detonated it wasn't fully loaded and ready - it only exploded at fifty megatons, which is still a tremendous force. This is a pretty cool piece of history: The world's biggest nuke. Why don't we hear more about it like we do things like the German's Maus supertank in WW2? Like the Maus, Tsar Bomba isn't much of a practical weapon but unlike the Maus and many other 'super' weapons over the years its existence seems like a great psychological weapon.

I suppose this thing was more common during the Cold War on both sides than we care to think, but here's a site about a fellow (Stanislav Petrov) who put his career in the Soviet Union on the line by ignoring what the computer told him and not blowing us all up.

History is something I like to study, even if I don't want to do it for a career.

Found a neat sight about all kinds of history: http://www.allempires.com/index.htm

It's like a copy of Spielvogel's Western Civilizations book, but online and constantly changing.

And this is a useful historical tool for the Roman Republic-era Med. conflicts:

I know I shared the second one in #Returners with the crew the other night, but that first one needs sharing too. :p
